101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 9

One of the goals on my 101 in 1001 list was to read one Christmas novel each Christmas season of the challenge.  Last year I read A Christmas Blizzard by Garrison Keillor and this year I read A Redbird Christmas by Fannie Flagg.

Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, along the banks of a lazy winding river, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it.

I love Flagg's novels; while predictable, they are also charming and uplifting and A Redbird Christmas was no exception.  It was a novel full of sweet characters and a lovely setting, however, the read just wasn't Christmasy enough for me (that's not to say that I'm not glad I didn't read this book because I never feel like I've wasted time in Flagg's worlds).  I haven't read many Christmas novels in my reading career so I'm not sure if they don't translate like movies but I plan to continue reading more in future holiday seasons.

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 8

I can't believe that Christmas is over and it's New Year's Eve tomorrow!  Seriously, where has this year gone?!

Okay, I know the last part of my year was spent enjoying holiday movies but where did the rest of it go?!  One of the tasks on my 101 in 1001 list is to watch 25 Christmas movies each Christmas season of the challenge and this year I managed to squeeze in 26!  I was hoping to watch a few more - so many good ones I didn't get around to - but there's always next year!  Here are the 26 I enjoyed this year:

1.  Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

2.  Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer

3.  Frosty the Snowman

4.  Frosty Returns

5.  Elf - This one is a must every year for Mitch and me.

6.  Trading Christmas (Hallmark) - One of the best movies I watched this year and I would even venture to say it's made it on my list of favorites.  I will definitely watch it again next year if it's on.

7.  On Strike for Christmas  (Lifetime)

8.  The Flight Before Christmas  (Lifetime)

9.  Crown for Christmas (Hallmark)

10.  'Tis the Season for Love (Hallmark)

11.  A Very Merry Mix-Up (Hallmark) - I've seen this movie before and really liked it so I had to watch it again.  It will probably make it on my list again next year if it's on.

12.  Christmas Under Wraps (Hallmark) - I watched this movie last year and enjoyed it so I watched it again this year.  I enjoyed it just as must this year but don't think it's Christmasy enough to justify watching it again next year.

13.  A Royal Christmas (Hallmark)

14.  12 Dates of Christmas (ABC Family) - This movie was so awesome; I do believe I'm going to add it to my Christmas list next year!  I can't believe I'd never seen it until this year!

15.  12 Gifts of Christmas (Hallmark)

16.  A Christmas Detour (Hallmark) - One of my least favorite movies I watched this season.  I will not be watching it again in the future.

17.  Family for Christmas (Hallmark)

18.  Holiday in Handcuffs - This movie has become one of my yearly musts.

19.  Home Alone

20.  Becoming Santa (Lifetime)

21.  Christmas Incorporated (Hallmark)

22.  The Christmas Ornament (Hallmark) - Ditto to #6!

23.  Wish Upon a Christmas (Lifetime)

24.  Just in Time for Christmas (Hallmark)

25.  Mistletoe Over Manhattan (Hallmark)

26.  National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Another must every year for Mitch and me.

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 7

One of the goals on my 101 in 1001 list is to read one Christmas novel each Christmas season of the challenge.  Last night I finished the book I chose this year.

I found A Christmas Blizzard by Garrison Keillor at the library's used book sale and thought it sounded like a fun read.

Snow is falling all across Minnesota as Mr. and Mrs. James Sparrow awaken in their modest Minneapolis apartment.  She adores Christmas; he loathes it.  Even nauseated, suffering from a stomach bug, she yearns to see The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol while he yearns only to fly to Hawaii and escape the joyless joy, the relentless marketing, and that dreadful pa-rum-pum-pum-pum song on the radio.  An urgent phone call from his cousin sends James flying off to his hometown of Looseleaf, North Dakota, into a heavy blizzard.  As he hunkers down in an ice house to weather the storm, stranded among his loony relatives, he is visited by a parade of figures who deliver him an epiphany worth of the season, just in time to receive Mrs. Sparrow's wonderful Christmas gift.

This book was quite the opposite of a fun read.  While short at less than 200 pages, it was an excruciating read that felt about ten times longer than it was.  About one-third of the way into the novel I discovered it was awful and started avoiding it.  When I realized I was running out of time to pick and complete an entirely new Christmas novel, I had to force myself to open the book and trudge through nearly every single sentence.  The plot was lacking, the sentences and conversations poorly constructed, and the characters annoying and unrealistic.  Plus, Keillor obviously doesn't know North Dakota.  I can honestly say this is one of the worst books I've ever read.

At least the cover was fun.

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 6

Today I got my very first piano!  It's strange but so very exciting to know that this beauty is mine and I can sit down and play in my own home any time I want (well, almost any time - I'm sure Mitch and Crickett still want to sleep at night)!

I knew I wanted a piano when I had my own house.  I also knew that I wanted that piano to be an old upright.  Upright pianos are beautiful not only for their size but the lovely little details that make them so unique.

Once our basement was complete and we settled in with the furniture, I started perusing the local classified ad website for pianos.  Mitch and I looked at two pianos during the last week in November and I was sold on this one.  Not only was she beautiful, she was free!  The only cost we incurred (thus far) was hiring a moving company to get her from the previous owner's house to our house.

She isn't perfect but I never expected to find an old piano that was.  She has her fair share of chips, knicks, and scratches but there is history here and there is something very special about that.  Mitch and I will be getting her cleaned, tuned, and repaired (a minor - hoping minor! - pedal issue) in the near future and then it will be time to get these rusty fingers back in piano-playing shape!  I can't wait!

So while I may not have technically "bought" a piano, I now own one and can cross this task off my 101 in 1001 list.  What a wonderful day!

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 5

In August I crossed off one of the many books tasks I have on my 101 in 1001 list:

Read a memoir

Josh Hanagarne couldn't be invisible if he tried.  Although he wouldn't officially be diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome until his freshman year of high school, Josh was six years old when he first began exhibiting symptoms.  When he was twenty and had reached his towering height of 6'7", his tics escalated to nightmarish levels.  Determined to conquer his affliction, Josh tried countless remedies, with dismal results.  At last, an eccentric, autistic strongman taught Josh how to "throttle" his tics into submission using increasingly elaborate feats of strength.  What started as a hobby became an entire way of life - and an effective way of managing his disorder.  Today, Josh is a librarian at Salt Lake City's public library and a founder of a popular blog about books and weight lifting - and the proud father of five-year-old Max.  Funny and offbeat, The World's Strongest Librarian traces this unlikely hero as he attempts to overcome his disability, find love, and create a life worth living.
~ Summary from Barnes & Noble website ~

This memoir caught my attention because not only was it about a librarian, it was about a librarian with Tourette Syndrome who got into weight-lifting.  I mean, come on, what an interesting combination!

The book started out strong and held my interest as Josh discussed his childhood, the beginnings of his tics, and the treatments he tried after his Tourette's diagnosis.  I learned more about the disorder in general and the specific descriptions Josh gave about his tics were exceptional; I could actually imagine the feelings he described.

I'm sure it comes as no surprise that my favorite portions of the book were those in which Josh talked about his love of reading and his experiences as a librarian.  I love hearing about the books that people not only enjoy, but those that have shaped them as people.  Josh's encounters at the library were very interesting and often laugh-out-loud funny; I never would have thought a librarian could come across such unbelievable people and situations.

I did struggle a bit with the portions of the book regarding Josh's experience growing up in the Mormon church and later his questioning of truly believing and staying in the church.  I felt like his church and faith (or lack thereof) didn't really advance the story in any way and could have been left out of the book almost entirely.  I felt these things interrupted the flow of the book and just added too much "busy work."

Josh really started to lose me during the last quarter or so of the book.  The weight-lifting topic took center stage and I felt the book got really bogged down at that point.  He went into too much detail which I didn't think was necessary.  We understood the basic concept that weight-lifting helped his tics and made his Tourette's manageable; I felt all the rest was just more "filler."  I'm not sure that the details would be interesting to many others unless they were into weight-lifting themselves.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be.  I think it would have been much better if Josh had focused on fewer topics.  Hanagarne is a very good writer and I would have liked to see more about books, reading, and his career as a librarian and less (if any) about his church and faith and less of his weight-lifting.  While I didn't personally like every part equally, I thought the book was worth reading and I would recommend it.

As a side note:  I cannot believe that Mitch and I didn't visit the Salt Lake City Main Library (where Hanagarne worked in the book) when we were there a few summers ago.  Look at this incredible building!

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 4

In mid-July my mom joined me as I crossed off "Attend the Garden Walk" from my 101 in 1001 list.

Every summer a local art school hosts a garden walk in which homeowners around town open up their beautiful gardens for the public to stroll through.  The tour took us through the historic district of town so not only did we see beautiful flora and fauna but charming architecture; I wouldn't have minded a few home tours as well!  This year's walk was the first time for both my mom and me but I don't think it will be the last.  My mom has a very green thumb so obviously this event is right up her alley and despite the fact that I have a black thumb I enjoy looking at and learning about flowers and plants.

I took nearly 100 photos of the wonderful flowers, plants, and houses we saw along our tour but somehow I deleted them all.  Luckily for me my mom had some that I could share here on my blog.

Our first stop brought us to a beautiful home that I hope is on the tour next year so I can be creepy and re-take the house photos I had.  In the back there was a beautiful patio area that reminded me of something you'd see in the movies and in one of the corners of the yard was this awesome brass kaleidoscope.  The bowl of flowers spun to provide the colors for the kaleidoscope and let me tell you, those were some stunning images!

This was, in my opinion, the most charming house we saw.  How could you not smile every time you pulled up to your house if it looked as lovely as this?

These hydrangeas were so ridiculously huge; I would venture to say they were about the size of a baby's head!  Mitch and I tried our hand at hydrangea bushes several years ago but they didn't survive (apparently new plants don't like to be ignored!) and these inspired me to try again.  I love the perfectly round ball shape and the dainty little petals that make it up.

The hydrangea house also had a lovely backyard with lots of colorful flowers and some awesome pots!

101 in 1001, Round 2 - 100 Happy Days, Day 100

My final day of the 100 Happy Days challenge was bittersweet; it was exciting yet sad to have come to the end of this activity that I so thoroughly enjoyed.

Day 100:  I am a sucker for quotes, always have been, and this has become one of my favorites.  Nothing compares to family; they are my lifetime of happy days.

Day 92:  A popsicle on this warm evening.

Day 94:  This instagram account fills my heart with so much joy.  If you don't follow @wolfgang2242, you should!  So wonderful!

Day 96:  My fall decorations have come out!

101 in 1001, Round 2 - 100 Happy Days, Days 82 Through 90

I can't believe I only have one more collage and a final photo before I'm done with this challenge!  It has gone by so fast!  Here are  Days 82 Through 90 of the 100 Happy Days Challenge!  (Descriptions left to right, top to bottom.)

Day 82:  The cozy quilt my parents gave me for my birthday (only two and half months late - that's how our family rolls!).

Day 83:  The park district I work for hosted its first dog parade and social to raise money for the dog park.  Such a great day - adorable dogs, wonderful people!  Feeling proud of my employer and even more in love with my community.

Day 84:  Finished furniture shopping for the house!  So excited to get the last pieces and then start decorating!

Day 85:  Watching my crazy little girl roll in her bowls of food after I fill them.  The laughs she gives me are always worth the hassle of clean up.

Day 86:  Spoiling my little girl with special treats on National Dog Day!

Day 87:  Coming home from work to a fun little gift hanging from my front door.  I have sweet friends.

Day 88:  Re-reading a classic.  I read To Kill a Mockingbird in high school (nearly 20 years ago!) but I don't remember much of it other than I liked it.  I'm really looking forward to reading it as an adult; I think I'll be able to appreciate it even more now.

Day 89:  The garden centers at home improvement stores.  So much fun looking at all the lovely fountains and flowers (and daydreaming I have a knack for those things!).

Day 90:  The look of a freshly mowed lawn.  Love those lines!

Day 74:  Air conditioning on ridiculously hot days like today makes me so comfortably happy.

Day 75:  Waking up to this face.  The best way to start the day.

Day 76:  Facebook's 'On This Day' feature.  I shared this photo and caption a year ago today:
"Had to take a break from my reading this evening to get a photo with the hubs."

Day 77:  Not being able to decide what to read next (because too many books sound good!).  It's one of the best "problems" to have.

Day 78:  Lunch at my parent's house with mom's homemade peach pie for dessert.  So delicious!

Day 79:  The dictionary app on my phone.  Words are wonderful.

Day 80:  A little girl's night out with some wonderful ladies.

Day 81:  A super fun mail day!  Doesn't get much better than a book of quotes and a couple of gnome prints for my library!

101 in 1001, Round 2 - 100 Happy Days, Days 64 Through 72

Days 64 Through 72 of the 100 Happy Days Challenge!  (Descriptions left to right, top to bottom.)

Day 64:  A few months ago I found some 2007 confetti at a thrift store.  This morning after Mitch went to work, I sprinkled it all over his stuff to say "Happy 8th Anniversary!" in my own obnoxious way.  When I got home from work I discovered the confetti sprinkled all over my stuff instead.  I think a new tradition has been started!

Day 65:  I love this sentiment!  My favorite season is just around the corner!

Day 66:  A new modem.  Fast internet again, yay!

Day 67:  The street signs for my library have arrived!  I'm so giddy!  (Purchased from Etsy.)

Day 68:  Getting the bed to myself for the next seven nights while Mitch is gone.  Okay, maybe I will have to (happily) share some of the space with a ridiculously adorable little girl.

Day 69:  Law & Order: Special Victims Unit marathons.  I love this show, could watch it all day.  Oh wait, I did!

Day 70:  Reading on the deck on this beautiful summer evening.

Day 71:  An impromptu cleaning session in my disaster of a craft room.  One of these days I'll actually get to use it to craft.

Day 72:  Finding the perfect little gift for my sister.  At the time I could only show a portion of the gift because my sister was going to see my post but now that she has the frame in her possession I can share a photo of the whole thing.

It's almost as if this frame was made for my sister; she crochets and sews, appreciates the awesomeness of buttons.  There was absolutely no way I could leave this little gem at the thrift store.  I knew no one could possibly appreciate it like my sister and it filled my heart with happiness to have found it for her.

101 in 1001, Round 2 - 100 Happy Days, Days 55 Through 63

Day 55:  Rediscovering my fun photo frame collection that has been boxed up since our move in 2008!

Day 56:  When a co-worker finds Oreos you've never seen before (which is a big deal since I consider myself an Oreo expert!).  These were quite tasty!

Day 57:  The calculator shortcut key on my keyboard at work.  It makes the number nerd in me giddy!

Day 58:  Found this little lady at the thrift store today.  She has a few dings and cracks but for $1.00 I couldn't not bring her home to my library.

Day 59:  Spending my lunch break at Barnes and Noble.

Day 47:  Cap'n Crunch Delights from Taco Bell.  So ridiculously delicious!  Yum, yum, yum!

Day 48:  Attending the Garden Walk with my mom.  So many beautiful gardens around town!  Love that people opened up their yards for us to stroll through.  (Lovely photo courtesy of my lovely mother as I somehow deleted all 92 photos I took that day!)

Day 49:  Hanging out with an old friend, reminiscing about college days and enjoying the antics of his three cute boys.

Day 50:  StoryPeople by Brian Andreas.  I love the quirky art and wonderful thoughts he captures.  The one shown is one of my favorites.

Day 33:  Spending the holiday with family.

Day 34:  The sign my father-in-law put in his front yard.  SO.APPROPRIATE.

Day 36:  My dad received the "Safe Helmet Award" for having his helmet on when he hit a deer on his motorcycle going 70 mph back in April. So proud he takes safety seriously!

101 in 1001, Round 2 - 100 Happy Days, Days 19 Through 27

Days 19 Through 27 of the 100 Happy Days Challenge!  (Descriptions left to right, top to bottom.)

Day 19:  My little gnome collection.  (This year I decided to display my gnomes inside the house.  I needed some summer decorations around the place and I didn't want to put the gnomes outside where they would slowly but surely get ruined by the elements so it was an all-around win-win situation!  I wish I would have thought of it sooner!)

Day 20:  Watching Crickett and Rizzo trying to help themselves to a treat from the open treat jar offered to them.  They were not successful.  They also didn't understand teamwork.

Day 21:  A beautiful evening walk with my little family.

Day 22:  Enjoying the Red Vines licorice Mitch had waiting for me when I got home from work.

Day 23:  An Etsy message that my purchases have been shipped!

Day 12:  Relay for Life.  Words can't describe how awful cancer is but this event is so incredibly beautiful.

101 in 1001, Round 2 - 100 Happy Days, Days One Through Nine

I put the 100 Happy Days Challenge on my 101 in 1001 list and decided my birthday - June 2nd - was the perfect day to start.  And because the challenge is such a wonderful one (everyone should do it!), I figured I would share all my happy days here on the blog.

So, here we go!  Days One Through Nine (descriptions left to right, top to bottom):

Day 1:  Coming home after being gone for 10 days.  Vacation was fun but there's no place like home!  (I'm hoping that eventually I'll get around to blogging about said vacation.)

Day 2:  Laundry straight from the dryer.

Day 3:  Coming back to work after vacation to birthday decorations and donuts!  My coworkers are so awesome!

Day 4:  A fun evening of painting with some wonderful ladies.

Day 5:  Staying up late to finish a book.

Day 6:  Watching my former league-mates play (and win!) their bout this morning at the BrewHaHa Roller Derby Tournament.

Day 7:  Watching my guilty pleasure with my favorite little girl.

Day 8:  Parking in the middle of the garage when my husband is out of town.

Day 9:  Watching beautiful sunrises from bed.  Not a bad way to start the day.  (Hard to believe the rest of the day was cloudy and rainy.)

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 3

I'm exited to share that I've crossed two more tasks off my 101 in 1001 list!

Earlier this month I completed the 1000-piece puzzle I started at the end of January.  It's interesting how the whole puzzle process worked; some days finding pieces that fit together took very little effort, if any, while other days it took a good half hour before I found a match.  Some days the puzzle was a relaxing activity and others it was a little annoying and I'd only get that one match before quitting.  While it was an enjoyable activity overall, I'm not sure it's a hobby I'll be taking up any time soon.  I have too many other things I want to do and, let's be honest, naps I want to take!  And an observation on the below picture: how adorable is Crickett's little photo bomb?!

Yesterday I finished the audio book I started a couple weeks ago.  I had heard that Bossypants was a great book and when I learned the audio version was read by Tina Fey herself, I thought it would be the perfect choice for this task.  I wanted something light and easy to follow, a novel that didn't require a lot of concentration on my part because I was planning on listening to it in my car on the drive to and from work.  Tina Fey - who has a great narrating voice, in my opinion - shared some wonderful observations and hilarious anecdotes.  I wonder how crazy I looked driving along by myself laughing hysterically?  If you haven't read (or listened) to this book, I highly recommend it.

Here are three of my favorite quotes from the book:

Contrary to what I believed as a little girl, being the boss almost never involves marching around, waving your arms, and chanting "I am the boss, I am the boss!"

"Defective" was a big word in our house.  Many things were labeled "defective" only to miraculously turn functional once the directions had been read more thoroughly.

When people say, "You really, really must" do something, it means you don't really have to.  No one ever says "You really, really must deliver the baby during labor."  When it's true, it doesn't need to be said.

101 in 1001, Round 2 - Update 2

In addition to completing the "host a crock-pot party" task on my 101 in 1001 list, I've also started several other activities.

Organizing my computer files/Organize digital photos.  I've been working on this since the new year hit and have made quite a bit of progress.  The documents (Word files, Excel spreadsheets) haven't been causing too much trouble but boy oh boy do I have a mess with my photos!  So many photos and so many duplicates (and then more duplicates) of a ridiculous amount of pictures.  I've already deleted THOUSANDS of photos and I still have a long way to go.  It's so much easier to stay on top of things than have to go back and work through it all; why do I never remember this at the present time?

Complete a 1000-piece puzzle by myself.  I started my puzzle this past Sunday.  I've made a lot more progress than I thought I would after seven days of working on it and have actually had more fun than I thought I would.  There's definitely something satisfying about finding two pieces that click together just right!  (Yes, nerd alert!)

Learn how to embroider/Learn how to crochet/Learn how to knit.  I ordered this book last week (totally old school - copyright 1979 with that lovely aged smell!) and all 685 pages arrived this week.  I have not yet dived into this wealth of information but I'm excited that I have this valuable tool at my fingertips when I am ready to get started my stitching endeavors.  Hopefully that will be real soon!

Watch an entire television series from beginning to end.  I've borrowed the Sex and the City series from a friend and since I haven't seen very many episodes it will almost be like starting a brand new show!
