LOOKING BACK

I have been hesitant to write a 2011 year in review post because 2011 was not really a great year; I'm extremely happy to see the year go and have not felt like reflecting much on it. However, not everything was bad. There were bright spots and I'm going to focus on those and carry them with me into this new year.

I was blessed to have the opportunity to make more memories with my amazing family (including my beautiful fur baby!). I got to spend time with old friends and make wonderful new ones. I finished another year of college, got to travel, and join a sport that I love dearly. For all of these things, I am truly thankful.

On to blogging endeavors. For one, I was not a good follower or commenter and I apologize for this. I look forward to catching up on your lives and showing you all some blog love! As for writing posts - well, I failed MISERABLY this year. The results:

So, looking ahead to 2012.

I didn't make any New Year's resolutions because I have already have a list of goals I want to accomplish with my 101 in 1001 challenge. I look forward to tackling as many of those as I possibly can and sharing my progress here.

I finally got the Christmas tree decorated today! (I'm definitely not on top of this Christmas thing this year.)

One of Mitch's and my favorite Christmas movies is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. We saw "The Griswold Family Christmas Tree" and knew it was the perfect addition to our Hallmark Keepsake ornament collection. It even plays the Christmas Vacation theme song!

Easter Ghosts

I did not receive any Peep bunnies or chicks in my Easter basket this year; I LOVE the sugar-coated marshmallows and was very disappointed when I didn't see any displayed among the chocolate. I gave the Easter Bunny a hard time.

The Easter Bunny brought these to my house on Sunday. I accepted this late payment but that does not mean I will tolerate the same behavior next year. I expect chicks and bunnies in my basket come April 8, 2012. Got that, Easter Bunny?

I did a little clearance Halloween shopping on Tuesday afternoon. Here are my finds from Hobby Lobby and JoAnn Fabric. So excited about my new decorations and can't wait to display them next year!

While I think Thanksgiving is great and all, I'm counting down to November 25th when I feel it's an appropriate time to take out my Christmas decor. My favorite holiday of the year is quickly approaching! YAY!

Goodbye, My Other Half: Famous Dog BFF of Tarra the Elephant Dies

Their unlikely bond was talked about around the world. Tarra, an 8,700-lb. Asian elephant, and Bella, a local stray who befriended her at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn., showed the world that true friendship comes in all shapes and sizes.

Sadly, Tarra said farewell to her longtime companion last week. The sanctuary says the dog was attacked by wild animals and that her giant pal carried her lifeless body back to the barn to mourn her.

"I am convinced Tarra experienced the death of her friend that fateful night, brought her home and said her goodbyes," said sanctuary CEO Rob Atkinson. "Tarra was a true friend to the end, and Tarra's sisters and caregivers will continue to take care of her, as she and Bella did each other."

Tarra and Bella first made national headlines in 2009 when CBS News did a story on the inseparable pair, who first met in 2003 at the sanctuary where elderly elephants live out their golden years.

"When it's time to eat they both eat together. They drink together. They sleep together. They play together," sanctuary co-founder Carol Buckley told Steve Hartman. "Bella knows she's not an elephant. Tarra knows she's not a dog. But that's not a problem for them."

Their bond was tested in 2008 when Bella was unable to walk due to a back injury. But Tarra's support was unwavering as she visited her friend at the Sanctuary's office everyday for three weeks. "She was concerned about her friend," Buckley said.

Their connection was strong until the very end of Bella's life last week. On Oct. 26, the sanctuary discovered the dog's body next to the elephant's barn, and, after studying the evidence – including wounds on the canine and blood stains on Tarra's trunk – they concluded that the dog was attacked by animals (most likely coyotes) and carried to that location by her faithful friend.

"Our poor, brave, loving girl knew what had happened to her beloved Bella," Atkinson wrote on The Elephant Sanctuary's blog. "And, in the dark hours of the night as she carried her body home, had come to terms with her death."

The sanctuary will keep a close eye on Tarra, who is "doing remarkably well," as she continues to mourn her best friend. To leave a tribute message to Bella, click here.

My (Not So) Storybook Life

I have been reading Liz's blog, Mabel's House, for a couple of years now. She is an amazing writer - her blog is one of my favorites, she's had me laughing and crying with her posts - and now she has a book coming out! I can't wait to have a copy of this in my hands!

Once one has breathed in the deep pungent aroma of sewage, you never again forget the nose-hair singeing, eye clawing, throat gagging experience. It comes over you slowly. You begin to feel like a character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as your muscles involuntarily jerk and you run screaming and blowing raspberries. Anything to get away from the mind-numbing stench.

But let me explain.

It was 6:30 a.m. I was standing in my retro pink tiled bathroom trying to open my bleary eyes and ready myself for work. As I stood there, peering into the mirror and wondering what demented nighttime fairy had planted four new wrinkles on my face, I paused and sniffed.

“Matt… what’s that smell?”

Matt staggered from the bedroom in his underwear, eyes half shut. “I don’t smell anything.”

I pointed my nose into the air like a hunting dog. “Seriously? You can’t smell that? Did you go to the bathroom in here earlier? I told you to use the room spray when you do things like that.”

Matt puffed out his bare chest and gathered his pride as best a man can with sleep in his eyes and a small hole in the side of his underwear. “I just woke up!”

I frowned, catching a glimpse of my makeup-less hot-rollers-in-hair state and tried not to think about the fact that I looked fifty instead of twenty-nine. “Well, help me figure this out. Because something smells ripe.”

We sniffed the sink drain and ruled it out as a suspect.

“Is it coming from the toilet?” Matt asked, examining it from top to bottom.

“No, that’s not it,” I snapped. I’m not known for my milk of human kindness in a disaster. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a survivor. I plan on eating my radish like Scarlet and clawing my way out of the nuclear dust while dragging my loved ones with me. But I won’t be doing it with positive phrases and a smile.

“Hon, I just don’t know. We’ll call a plumber after work, maybe it’s coming from under the house.” Matt staggered a little, trying to get past me and out of our tiny bathroom.

“Well, that’s just great,” I moved aside and pulled the shower curtain back so I could perch on the side of the tub and give Matt room to move out the door.

That’s when the full brunt of nastiness filled the air around us, a swirling mix of excrement and acrid stench that would have brought the sewer dwelling Ninja Turtles to their knees. Where the normally slightly-clean-with-a-hint-of-soap-scum bottom of the tub should have been, there sloshed gallons and gallons of brown sewage.

I clutched the front of my sweatshirt and held my breath. Matt began to dry heave.

“Get out and shut the door!” I screamed as we bumbled into the hallway.

“I’ll deal with this,” Matt grabbed my shoulders, trying to talk and hold his breath at the same time.

I could feel my eyes glaze over, the horrors of typhoid and hepatitis in our bathtub filling my mind. But more importantly, I could envision our evaporated savings account. In my mind’s eye I could see the long, gray hallway at the bank. A worker shrouded in a black suit pulled a set of keys from his pocket and unlatched a small locker labeled “Owen Bank Account.” Inside were two small stacks of quarters and a few crumpled dollar bills. It was bleak, not only because the banker with an unimaginative wardrobe gazed at me with an expression that could only be interpreted as “You’re a Big Fat Loser,” but also there was a very definite possibility we wouldn’t be able to pay for a plumber.

I wasn’t necessarily a spend thrift. In fact, I was downright frugal when it came to decorating with thrift store furniture and rewired vintage lamps. But the fact was, we were poor. We were starting out at starter jobs with starter salaries. We were starter adults with a starter bank account.

“Okay,” I nodded numbly, thankful that Matt was taking the lead on such a disastrous biohazard. “But make sure the plumber is super cheap. We don’t have much money!”

I left for work like a wino stumbling through a fog, not really remembering my commute, not really doing any work as I sipped my coffee and stared blankly at the computer screen. A disaster of such gargantuan proportions had previously been unthinkable in my life, and now I found myself attempting to push the image of a vast sea of bathtub poop from my mind. But I was sure of one thing: Anne Shirley never had to get ready for work while breathing raw sewage.

Utah Vacation - Day 2

Our second day in Salt Lake City wasn't any more exciting than our first day. Mitch had conferences all afternoon and I just bummed around the hotel room. It was a nice, relaxing day of sleeping in and reading my book.
That evening we ate downtown (had a delicious Philly cheese steak sandwich and cheesy fries) and then wandered around the city for a while.

I love when cities don't forget about including trees and other greenery alongside the concrete and buildings.

Salt Lake City has flags for pedestrians to carry across the street so they can be seen. I didn't actually cross this street but couldn't pass up a photo op. I also like that they had LOOK painted on the streets at each crosswalk. Apparently this city really cares about its pedestrians!

Utah Vacation - Day 1

The reason for Mitch’s trip to Salt Lake City was for the National Fraternal Order of Police National Conference. I had no real reason to go; just tagged along because I’d never been to Utah and I wanted to take advantage of the chance to meet a wonderful blog friend!

Mitch and I were up at 3:00 in the morning to get to the local airport by 5:00; I did not think that was an appropriate time to leave for a vacation but the airlines didn’t ask me my opinion on the matter. Our group flew to Minneapolis, had a short layover, then flew to Salt Lake City. Mitch took this photo as we flew into the city. The only thing to report about the flights was that I had to sit next to a woman wearing one of the worst perfumes ever made. I don’t think people should be allowed to cover themselves in any type of scent when they are going to be in a confined space with a large group of people.

Our first afternoon and evening in Salt Lake City didn’t consist of anything too exciting. Mitch and his colleagues got checked in at the conference center, our group checked into the hotel, we walked around The Gateway (an outdoor mall), and a couple of us drove to Wal-Mart for some necessities. It was a nice day but I was sure happy when bedtime rolled around; I was exhausted!

I forgot to take photos of our hotel room, so I had to steal some off the hotel's website.

A king-size bed right next to the window. In the mornings, the sun would shine in on my side of the bed; it was a marvelous way to start the day!

We turned the dry bar into "snack central." It was much more fun that way!

I was quite impressed with our toilet seat. It was one of those fancy models that closes automatically - and slowly - with just a little nudge from the user. So entertaining!

A Mirror, Grandparents, and Roller Derby

I have no excuses for my lack of blogging. I wish I could say it was because I'm so busy but that just wouldn't be true. For some reason, I am no longer good at managing my time. How, at 30 years old, do I not have this down to an art? Oy! Anyhoo, to get my butt back in gear with blogging, I thought I would share with you some of the happenings in my little world as of late. Then it will be on to vacation posts!

On Saturday, September 10th, I decided that I didn't need my driver's side mirror and smashed it against the side of the garage as I was pulling out. Oopsie!

On Sunday, September 11th, I joined my parents and sister on a trip to visit my grandparents on their special day. I think this was the first Grandparent's Day I actually spent with my grandparents; it was wonderful.

In other, no-photo news:

I wore a pair of my mismatched socks to roller derby practice this past Wednesday. I survived but I do think the combination of frogs on the left foot and ducks on the right foot was the cause of my crappy practice. I think I fell more that evening than I have the entire time I've been skating.

On Saturday, one of my roller derby teammates hosted a party to celebrate the team's one year birthday. It was a fun evening with some of my favorite women. I often wonder if all derby teams are as awesome as ours. I doubt it!

Screen Door and Socks

I've been wanting a screen door since Mitch and I moved into our house nearly three years ago. On Wednesday, my dear husband finally found the time to install one. It was kind of a stressful deal involving lots of swearing and a little bleeding, but that's beside the point; it's up and I'm very excited to have another place where I can see outside and another space where the fall sun can shine in. (Anyone else THRILLED that autumn is coming?)

And on Wednesday evening at practice, one of my wonderful roller derby friends gave me these socks to wear with my skates. Cute, huh? But notice how none of them match? Apparently that's the "hip" thing right now and all the "cool" kids are doing it. I personally think she is trying to give me a complex. If she hadn't bought these out of town, I probably would have run to the store to buy another pack in order to have matching pairs! Think I can handle this mismatch business?

Best Childhood

I've been feeling a little down these past few days; no particular reason, just a mood I guess. Today I went to my parent's house between classes to work on homework. I attempted one problem and when it didn't work out I gave up and looked at old photos. Nothing cheers me up quite like looking at the memories my family has made over the years. I left the house with a happy heart.

My sister and I were two very blessed little girls. We had a wonderful childhood filled with toys, travel, and lots and lots of love. There are hundreds of photos to prove it.

Thank you, mom and dad, for giving your two crazy daughters the best childhood imaginable.

Three Tidbit Thursday

~ I have two major topics I want to finish blogging about in September: 1) Utah trip and 2) Florida trip. I cannot believe I still haven't finished blogging about the vacation Mitch and I took in January!

~ I began my fall semester of courses last week Monday. It looks like my favorite classes are going to be Fraud Examination and Auditing I. Yes, I'm a nerd.

~ Last week Monday, I also took my roller derby skills test. I passed, which means I am no longer "Fresh Meat." This means I get to practice with the "real" team, including my sister. I'm so excited to be part of this awesome group of women! Two other perks of passing my skills test include a jersey with my name and number and a custom made mouth guard. Woot, woot!

Utah Christmas Ornament

In case you didn't realize, it's only four months until Christmas! I'm getting excited! Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I see my decorations every time I go downstairs. Anyhoo, I thought today was the perfect day to show you the Christmas ornament that Mitch and I bought while visiting Utah last week.

It's in the shape of the state and is made from salt crystals from the Great Salt Lake. Pretty cool, huh?

Some fellow derby gals and I attended a local drag show. It was the first time I had ever been to one; it was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to going again!

Special Corner and Pears

When I got home this afternoon, the house was completely quiet. No husband, no puppy. As I walked by the bedroom window, I caught a glimpse of something in the yard. There sat my husband in "his corner," rubbing Crickett's tummy.

Sometimes Mitch just likes to sit or stand in the corner and look out over the yard. He claims Crickett likes to join him but I'm not so sure. I tell my better half on a regular basis that he's a crazy old man; it should be interesting to see the ridiculous things he does when he is actually old.

And in other news, nearly all our pears have fallen off the trees.

I'm not sure if the fruit was too heavy for the branches or the crazy wind we had yesterday was responsible (perhaps a combination of both), but now we're down to one pear per pear tree.

I am bummed. Crickett is fascinated.

A Blog Friend and a Teapot

A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of meeting Megan, a blog friend from here in North Dakota. She was as cute and fun as I thought she would be in person and I hope we have the opportunity to spend some more time together in the future. (I wanted to get a picture of us together but being the bad photographer I have been lately, no such picture exists. Boo on me!)

Megan is also a HUGE SWEETHEART! She blogged about an adorable Christmas teapot earlier this summer and I jokingly asked her if she wanted my address so she could send it to me. What did she bring along on her visit? The teapot! I am beyond excited to add this to my collection of Christmas decorations! Thanks again, Megan!

Doggy Daycare

Moses came to our house on Tuesday evening and will be staying with us for a week while his mama is in California. I feel like I'm running a daycare. There are toys scattered all over the house, I'm doing potty checks every couple hours, and I'm constantly telling one of the dogs to leave the other one alone.

These two are lucky they are so cute otherwise their ridiculous antics might not be quite so humorous.

Sunday, June 19th - I love how the sun shines into our house in the summer. I think the sun should shine in our kitchen all year round - it makes eating breakfast just that much better. I had my second derby practice this evening. The first 20-minutes of practice were spent doing "off-skate" training, including lunges that left me so shaky I could hardly skate the rest of the night. I'm definitely going to get strong legs from this derby business.

Tuesday, June21st- The first day of summer. It was cold, rainy, and windy. I hope it's not a predictor of the rest of the summer ahead although I have heard it's supposed to be a cool, wet one.

Wednesday, June 22nd - On Wednesdays, the "Freshies" (those of us derby girls in training are called "Fresh Meat" or "Freshies") have open skate, which means we don't have official practice but are allowed to come to the rink to skate and practice skills if we'd like to. Several of us "Freshies" got together on this evening and one of the other gals helped me adjust the trucks of my skates (trucks control movement). I definitely felt better on my skates that night than I had at our previous two practices so I'm glad I got over my fear of changing anything on my gear.

Thursday, June 23rd - My family celebrated Father's Day since we weren't able to do it on Sunday. We went out for dinner and then had ice cream cake - yum, yum! (Side note: An old lady said I looked like a hippie in the skirt I had on!)

Friday, June 24th - I felt super trashy this day. Mitch and I ate dinner at a pizza buffet (which I absolutely love but I always feel a little trashy when I eat at buffets - anyone else feel that way?) and that night I watched FashionPolice (I know, I know - yikes Holly!).

Sunday, June 26th - My third derby practice which means we're half-way through training! We have a lot to learn in the three upcoming practices!

Today, Monday, June 27th - A week ago, I discovered pears growing on both our pear trees and tonight Mitch discovered apples growing on our apple tree. It's so exciting to see the fruit and I'm anxious to see how large they get this year. They are currently about half an inch in diameter.

Monday, June 6th - My second summer school course - Principles of Macroeconomics - started (online). I am definitely a nerd because I'm really enjoying this class and even like reading the textbook. I was suppose to have my first roller derby practice on this day but the practice space is currently being used for storage due to the flooding. Luckily the team found a new place to practice and I only had to wait an extra six days before I started. This was also the evening I got sucked into "The Bachelorette" (I know, I know - yikes, Holly!). In case you're wondering, my current favorite is J.P.

Wednesday, June 8th - Flower shopping with my mom and sister! I think greenhouses have to be one of the best places to spend time. How can you not be happy in a place like this?

Sunday, June 12th - I had my first derby practice! It was a lot of fun and I met some amazing gals. We spent practice just getting used to skating around and then falling on our knees. Also, history was made that evening when my father sent his first-ever text message!

Tuesday, June 14th - My blog's fourth birthday! I love that I have four years worth of memories recorded here.

Saturday, June 18th - Moses (Crickett's half-brother) came to stay with us for a couple of days while his mama did some traveling around the state. There is nothing cuter than dealing with the shenanigans of these two fur-kids.

Sunday, May 29th - Saw "Bridesmaids" with my mothers. It was hilarious and I think I may have even enjoyed it more than the buttered popcorn (and that's saying something)!

Tuesday, May 31st - First summer school class - Management Information Systems - started (online). I cannot begin to describe how much I despise this class and how unnecessary it is for my major. Only one more week left! Spent the afternoon sandbagging with a friend. Bismarck-Mandan is currently battling the rising Missouri River due to record snow- and rainfall in both North Dakota and Montana. Flooding became an issue in mid-May and is expected to continue throughout the summer. Bismarck has built a massive levee to protect residents in the floodplain on the south side of town (including my parents and in-laws) but many of those outside of city limits haven't been quite so lucky. Yesterday, a home was swept away by the river and officials say it may not be the only one. My heart is heavy for that family - I cannot even imagine what it must feel like to watch your house being swallowed up and then carried away by flood water. This is definitely a time that will go down in the record books - unfortunately.

Wednesday, June 1st - Spent the night sandbagging with friends and my dad in hopes of reaching the city's goal of eight million sandbags by the next day. It was a chaotic evening but it was awesome seeing so many people out helping the community.

*Minot is also battling devastating flooding due to the rising Souris River (the story actually made national news last night and is one the lead headlines this morning on MSN). Nearly a quarter of the city's population, 10,000 residents, had to evacuate their homes yesterday as water began to spill over the dikes. Please keep the residents of Bismarck, Mandan, and Minot in your thoughts and prayers.*

Thursday, June 2nd - On to some happier news. I turned the big 3-0 this month! The 20s were great but I think the 30s are going to be even better.

Saturday, June 4th - Bought myself a pair of patterned fishnet tights for roller derby! I suspect it will be the first of many. Spent the gorgeous evening in the backyard with Crickett. I love the sights, sounds, and smells that you experience outside this time of year.

Life Update

1. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I have dropped out of the Spring Fever Challenge. I like challenges (and Amy's are great!) so I may join another one like this in the future but right now I just want to concentrate on my 101 in 1001 list.

2. Speaking of 101 in 1001, over the weekend I read the short story The Hunter’s Wife by Anthony Doerr. I do not enjoy short stories because I can’t seem to develop a connection with the characters and this story was no exception. (Sorry, Moll!) I went in with an open mind but apparently this is just not the type of reading for me.

3. Earlier in the month, I was given the Stylish Blogger Award by Lisa at Charlie the Cavalier. Thank you, Lisa!

As part of the award, here are three of Crickett's quirks:

Crickett prefers dirt (and even snow) over grass.

Crickett will only drink water out of the cup in our master bathroom. Her bowl is always full of water but it only gets used by puppy visitors.

Crickett loves to have her neck blown on.

4. Between a trip to Washington D.C. and working the night shift, Mitch has been gone more evenings this month than he has been home. During this time, I became a night owl and discovered reruns of “How I Met Your Mother” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” I really like these shows and would venture to say that “How I Met Your Mother” has even made it onto my list of favorites; I now understand the good reviews it got from everyone.

5. Mitch and I have been dealing with water in our basement again this spring. We had a landscaping company come over to work on the issues contributing to the problem. So now, instead of green grass, we have a patch of dirt on the west side of our house. Combine dirt patches with wind and you have a situation that is not ideal for hanging clean laundry out on the clothesline. Bummer.

6. I got A’s in all of my classes this spring! I start summer school on May 31^st and will be busy with that until July 31^st. I will be taking two courses, “Principles of Macroeconomics” and “Management Information Systems”; sounds like exciting stuff, huh? I received my graduation audit several weeks ago and it looks like I will have a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree at the end of the spring 2012 semester. So thrilled!

7. On Saturday I watched my sister and her derby team compete in their first home bout. It was so much fun and my sister did an amazing job as a jammer. I was so proud of her and lost my voice from screaming so much. Yesterday I bought my derby gear and on June 6^th I have my first practice. I cannot wait!

Finals Week

It's finals week and while it has probably been one of the least stressful finals weeks I've ever had, there were semesters when I could definitely relate to the following article. It made me laugh.

"How to Make Yourself Absolutely Miserable During Finals Week" by Alice Mills, PhD

For those of you who would like to increase the discomfort of your finals experience I offer some student tested techniques to help ensure an absolutely miserable finals week:

Start to decrease your sleep time the week before exams and continue this mind-numbing technique throughout finals week.

Skip breakfast and forgo all nutritious foods in favor of coffee, fast foods, and chocolate.

Stop all exercise and park yourself in one location with your books until finals are over.

Now that your body is beginning to show signs of physical wear and tear (you're feeling sleepy -- very sleepy), it's time to start on your mind:

Begin by reviewing what you should have done earlier in the semester. Tell yourself, "I should have started studying sooner," or, "I should have taken better notes." Should all over yourself! Spend your precious study time living in the past. Feel the guilt!

Next focus on what your instructors should have done. "They should have explained the concepts better. They should have assigned less reading." Share the blame. Why should you have to study all this stuff? Life is just so unfair. Get angry!

Focus all your attention on your discomfort. Tell yourself, "I can't stand this!" Awfulize, maximize your pain. "Finals week is unbearable!" Experience the dejection and suffering.

Pump up your tension with some extreme language. Sprinkle your self-talk with words like "never," "always" and "everybody." For example, "I'll never get done! This always happens to me. Everybody else is finished." Experience the angst of absolute defeat.

Maximize your weaknesses. Call yourself some names. Remember to use judgmental global labels that suggest you have no redeeming qualities. "How could I be so STUPID! Everyone will know I'm a FAILURE! I'm such a JERK!" Self-abuse can be the most potent kind. Feel inadequate!

Focus on all the negative events of the semester. Forget your successes. Paint it black.

Finally, predict the worst possible outcomes and ignore all evidence to the contrary. "I'm going to fail!" Live in the catastrophic future you've created in your head. Who can study or take an exam with all these negative emotions? You just can't focus.

Tomorrow at 3:00pm, I will officially be done with the Spring 2011 semester. I can't wait for my two-week vacation! My brain is tired!

One of the goals on my 101 in 1001 list was to donate to a needy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and while I would donate to all of them if I could, when I saw this little girl I knew she was the one I was meant to help.

Lilliput in Kernersville, NC

This past Fall, an emergency call came in, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel needed to be rescued. When the foster couple arrived at the designated meeting place they were handed a blue bath towel with an emaciated Blenheim curled up inside. This tiny girl trembled in silence as the foster couple returned to their car. She was smeared with blood and excrement. The pale pink Cavalier skin was filthy, and her ears were matted with dirt, leaves and food particles that required most of the hair had to be cut off. She looked so sad with those big black eyes peering out of that blue towel. Her head was tilted against her front paws and she was so weak she could not hold her head up for more than a couple of minutes.

Lilliput was rushed straight away to an emergency veterinarian hospital. She was in shock; her blood sugar was 24 (normal for a canine is 74 to 150). She weighed 5.3 lbs. The veterinary team began working to save her life. First she was given straight Karo Syrup to raise her blood sugar, and an IV was started to hydrate her. This began a very long and expensive road to recovery. Tests revealed that Lilliput had heartworms, hook worms, whip worms and awful teeth. She was so malnourished that the hair on the back of her legs, her neck, and tail no longer grew in those areas. The first 48 hours the foster couple took turns getting up every two hours to force feed this tiny little dog pureed high calorie/protein food. On the third morning they were awakened to the sweet music of Lilliput gently barking. It was music to their ears and they knew she was going to survive this episode.

She was treated over a three month period for heartworms, treated for intestinal parasites, and had 22 teeth pulled. Her weight was problematical and her weight gain was two steps forward and two steps back. One day, the foster couple came home to find Lilliput wedged in a corner, shallow rapid breathing, and rigidly curled up in a fetal position. She was rushed to the emergency vet and once again was give iv fluids to rehydrate and glucose for a blood sugar of 21. After blood work she was diagnosed with EDP (a pancreatic enzyme deficiency that causes the dog to waste away). She was placed on a regiment of high protein, low glycemic veggies, and pancrezine. Lilliput has shown continual improvement, and has gained up to 2 pounds, but as they would say she is brittle, she has good days and bad days.

It is very difficult to explain to someone the horrible conditions of a Puppy Mill – these little dogs live in wire cages all their life, receive small portions of very cheap dog food, and rarely see a vet. The fact that there are only 12 States (North Carolina is not one of them) that have puppy mill laws is unconscionable. Lilliput and other dogs like her have done nothing to harm anyone and in no way deserve the horrid conditions that puppy mills ignore in an effort to turn a profit.

Due to the horrible environment in which Lilliput was raised and lived for the biggest part of her life, this beautiful 3 to 4 year old little Blenheim with the body of an 8 to 10 month old Cavalier desperately needs your help. The Cavalier rescue has spent thousands to save, diagnose, and treat sweet Lilliput. We are reaching out asking for donation to help off-set these expenses and replenish the funds so that other rescued Cavaliers can continue to receive the care they need.

Spring Fever Challenge: Week 5

I forgot to update you all last week on my progress with the Spring Fever Challenge; does that give you a sense of how well I've been doing with my goals? Yikes! I wanted to skip updating this week as well and have actually thought about quitting this challenge altogether. *Sigh*

Here is a little reminder of what my goals are:
Start walk-to-run program
Limit desserts to two a week
Limit Facebook logins and blog reading to once a day
Use my DSLR camera at least once a week
Complete five things from my 101 in 1001 list
Spring organizing and purging
Take Crickett for a walk at least three times a week

1. What have you done this past week to help you achieve your goals?
Goal #1 - Nothing to report yet. I love running and I love how good it makes me feel so why is it I can't get motivated to do it?

Goal #2 - BIG fail here. I lost all self-control when the Easter baskets arrived. That darn Easter bunny!

Goal #3 - Not my best week. I didn't spend much time reading blogs but I did hop on Facebook quite a bit.

Goal #4 - Forgot about this goal yet again.

Goal #5 - I did complete one thing from my 101 in 1001 list. I donated money to a needy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I'll share her story sometime this week.

Goal #6 - No organizing or purging in Week 5 but I did manage to do a little in Week 4. I attacked some of the mess in my scrapbooking room and it felt good.

Goal #7 - Crickett and I made it on two walks and this next week is supposed to be nice so I expect we will get out at least three times.

2. What did you do this past week to make you feel good about yourself?
I actually curled my hair one day rather than throwing it up in a ponytail like I usually do. I know it sounds like such a simple, silly act but I feel more attractive (and, thus, confident) with my hair down.

3. It's May! What were your victories in April? Challenges?
April was a good month in terms of health and happiness but it was also quite challenging mentally. When I feel overwhelmed with school and work, I let everything else fall by the wayside and that is exactly what happened in April.

4. Do you have any plans for the challenge in May?
My plans for May will be to actually challenge myself with the goals I set at the beginning of this challenge. I'm tired of reporting about my lack of success!

5. Fun Question: What is your favourite type of ethnic cuisine?
Definitely Italian!

It's another beautiful spring day here in North Daktoa. Oh wait, it's not; a good portion of the state is in a Blizzard Warning. Mother Nature is currently blessing us with more snow and winds blowing at 30-40mph.

I thought today would be a good day to proudly display the Sunshine Award that Jaclyn at Positive Ponderings awarded me this week. Thank you, Jaclyn! It's nice to know when it's cloudy outside, we can find sunshine inside at our computers on one another's blogs.

I hope you're all having a sunny Saturday, whether it's outdoors or indoors.

My sister recently brought my attention to the blog New Dress A Day.

In November 2009, Marisa Lynch challenged herself to the following:

"The only shopping that I’ll be able to do is that of pieces that have been used and worn already. So long to mall trips and hello to sifting through piles of vintage pieces at flea markets and at neighborhood garage sales. Each day for the entire year, I’m going to introduce a new piece into my existing wardrobe that I’ve found from these places. On top of this, I’m giving myself a budget of $1 a day.

One person’s trash is becoming my treasure this year.

I just finished reading The Ersatz Elevator, the sixth book in "A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket. (It's a great little series if you're interested in children's books.) I ran across this quote last night and it made me smile:

"A good library will never be too neat, or too dusty, because somebody will always be in it, taking books off the shelves and staying up late reading them."
